Kevin Palmer Painting has provided interior and exterior professional painting services to residential and commercial customers for over 50 years.

Looking back upon our company’s growth and evolution, it is with a great sense of pride of accomplishment and acknowledgment and appreciation of our good fortune that we look to the future.

When Kevin Palmer Painting began business in the 1960s, oil-based paints were the gold standard, solid body stains were rarely used, and airless spray applications were unheard of.

The first home we painted was our parents’ home in Simsbury Connecticut. Our father purchased Sears Best Weather Beater paint, provided the brushes and drop cloths, and just like that, we were in business! Our mother was a perfectionist and was skeptical at best.

The house took longer to paint than we ever imagined, but we certainly learned a lot. Painting our parents’ home taught us the importance of preparation work, the need to be knowledgeable about paint products and tool usage, and an appreciation for the importance and necessity of doing quality work. We had to please our (scared to death) mom who envisioned a disaster of epic proportions.

Our hard work paid off. The job was a success! Our parent’s neighbors noticed our hard work and their beautifully painted home, and soon we were receiving calls from others to paint their homes. Our prices were fair, the quality of our work was excellent, and over time we developed a reputation for providing a superior paint job and long-lasting value.

As time progressed and our painting business grew, we needed to hire additional painters. We always hired the best persons possible and our choice of quality individuals was key to our growth and success. We trained our painters using best practices, taught everyone to pay attention to detail, and insisted that the job site always be kept neat. Our painters, some of whom have been with us for over 30 years, have been the key to our success. To a person, our painters are highly skilled, professional, honest, and very nice people.

Over the years we’ve had the good fortune of painting over 5000 houses in the West Hartford Connecticut and Farmington Valley towns. We have had the opportunity to paint some of the most beautiful properties in the area. The name Kevin Palmer Painting has become synonymous with quality work. Once a project is slated for scheduling, a written Proposal is sent out. The Proposal describes in detail the scale, scope, and pricing of the work to be done. We always give a start and completion date so our customers can schedule accordingly. Our Proposal includes our Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor license number, our EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm registration number, and a Notice of Cancellation.

Approximately a week prior to starting work, our customers receive notification providing the date and time work will be starting. This notification helps our customers with their planning needs and provides an opportunity to answer any last minute questions. We make every attempt to work around our customer’s busy schedules, pet needs, and seasonal/situational issues; perhaps a birds nest under the deck with babies about to hatch or a graduation party ready to happen. Our exterior painting projects begin with a thorough pressure washing of all surfaces scheduled to be painted. Our washing process will remove mold, mildew, and surface contaminants. Our attention to detail assures our customers’ homes will be clean and ready for painting.

The preparation process is the next step along the way and probably the most important part of our job. We cover and protect our client’s properties throughout the work process. Lightweight, leak-proof drop cloths capture and contain debris generated during our scraping and sanding efforts. Our professional painters carefully apply caulk to cracks and openings where moisture or insects may enter. They apply shellac to knot holes, stains, and discolorations to ensure that bleed-through will not be of concern. Kevin Palmer Painting are experts at glazing windows, and we can make look old sash look and perform like new.

The actual painting process is where all of our efforts come together. Our painters use skill, experience, equipment, and premium paints and stains to transform our client’s homes and businesses. Farrow & Ball -The World’s Best Paint

At Kevin Palmer Painting we recently received an invitation from Mr. Tom Mach to work with him on a residential painting project. The work involved updating 2 bedrooms for a valued residential customer using Farrow & Ball paint.

Having been in the painting business for 50 years, we have used many products from virtually every major paint manufacturer. Farrow & Ball, however, was new to us. What would this “new” paint be like? Would it be easy to work with? How would the coverage be? Most importantly, would it meet the high discriminating expectations of our client?

As it turned out, the new paint was a hit with the painters and a home run with the customer.

Our 1st order of business was to thoroughly prepare the rooms for finish. We began this job by carefully covering all the floors and protecting the homeowner’s possessions. We sanded down all of the areas to receive finish, cleaned everything thoroughly, and used a tack rag to remove all dust. Open holes were filled, cracks were repaired, and all woodwork and trim were carefully caulked to ensure a seamless foundation.

We then began painting. First we completed the ceilings. We checked our work carefully and thoroughly to make sure that the color and finish were uniform. The Farrow & Ball paint worked perfectly. Easy to use, no dragging of the brush, and a beautiful, even finish. Next the woodwork received 2 finish coats. The finish on the Farrow & Ball paint was extraordinary. The leveling and beautiful sheen gave the woodwork a beautiful, luxurious finish that was better than any latex paint we have ever used. Finally the walls received 2 coats and the room simply radiated beauty.

The depth of the colors and the quality of the finish of the Farrow & Ball paint were beyond superb. How to Choose An Exterior Paint Color

When painting a home, selecting a color for the exterior can be a daunting experience. The painting professionals at Kevin Palmer Painting have been helping customers choose the perfect color for their homes for decades.

Colors, colors everywhere. Which to choose?

 

The best approach to exterior painting color selection is to choose the siding color first. Do not concern yourself with the color of the shutters or the front door until after you have selected the main body color.

 

We recommend driving around your neighborhood and locally to find house colors that are appealing to you. Try to differentiate what it is about the house you like from the houses that you don’t like. Sometimes it’s the color, sometimes it’s the combination of colors, sometimes it’s the roof and how it blends with the siding color, sometimes it’s how the house is sited or its relationship with the landscaping.

 

Recognize that shingles, shakes, and clapboard siding will appear differently even when painted with the exact same color and sheen. Stucco and brick will also influence the way a color appears. Determine what you like about a color. Isolate the color from the structure. Try to look at houses with siding similar to your house.

Look at magazines. There are many pictures of houses which may have color combinations that might be what you are looking for. Apps are another excellent option to consider. Houzz and Pinterest have many examples of different houses and will offer ideas about color possibilities.

 

Paint manufacturers offer computer programs allowing you to take a picture of your house, upload the image, and paint your home in a virtual manner. This process will give you an idea of what your home will look like with varying colors and you can switch your options with a click of your mouse. A visit to your local paint store is helpful. There you will find color decks, larger color samples, and color collections. You will find groupings of historical colors, trending colors, contemporary colors, and everything in between.

Once the primary color for the body of the house has been narrowed down, Kevin Palmer Painting makes samples for our customer’s consideration. We make samples on different exposures so our clients get a good idea of what the color looks like on different areas at different times of the day.

Perception and reality are not always the same. If you don’t like the sample color on the house after a sample is made, no problem. We will not rush you on color selection and will make as many samples as you need to assure that you love your home’s new color.

When you finally determine the body color that you like the best, move on to the shutter and door colors. Often times it is very helpful to use color cards for this process. What we typically advise is to look at coordinated color cards that show compatible and complementary colors. Look for one of the colors in the group that is the same as or close to your siding color, and then look at other colors in that grouping to see professional decorator’s recommendations. Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

What is the best time of year to paint your home?

Our exterior season starts in April and continues through October. We closely watch weather daily conditions and forecasts to always paint within manufacturer specified temperature and humidity ranges.

How often should the average homeowner get their house painted?

For exterior residential painting we recommend recoating between 5 – 7 years. Decks should be properly preserved very 2 years. We recommend power washing every 2 – 3 years. Interior painting longevity tends to be a function of wear and tear and quality of the previous coating.

What qualities should people look for in a good painting contractor?

A quality painting contractor should be honest, dependable, and reliable. Skilled, experienced painters are a must. Meeting insurance and licensing requirements is a necessity, as well as meeting EPA Lead-Safe requirements.

Are there any green products you have been utilizing in recent years?

Kevin Palmer Painting uses “green” products where appropriate and beneficial to our customer’s needs. Low or no VOC products are used when appropriate. Our company participates in recycling, establishing the most efficient route to job sites, carpooling, and minimizing our carbon footprint wherever possible. We strive to decrease our impact on the environment by minimizing waste and maximizing quality and durability. Minimizing excess, preservation of resources, and knowledge and application of environmentally friendly painting procedures are very important to Kevin Palmer Painting.

It is sometimes said that picking a color is the most difficult part of the painting project. What assistance, if any, do you offer your customers in choosing a color?
