Looking back upon our company’s growth and evolution, it is with a great sense of pride of accomplishment and acknowledgment and appreciation of our good fortune that we look to the future.

When Kevin Palmer Painting began business in the 1960s, oil-based paints were the gold standard, solid body stains were rarely used, and airless spray applications were unheard of.

The first home we painted was our parents’ home in Simsbury Connecticut. Our father purchased Sears Best Weather Beater paint, provided the brushes and drop cloths, and just like that, we were in business! Our mother was a perfectionist and was skeptical at best.

The house took longer to paint than we ever imagined, but we certainly learned a lot. Painting our parents’ home taught us the importance of preparation work, the need to be knowledgeable about paint products and tool usage, and an appreciation for the importance and necessity of doing quality work. We had to please our (scared to death) mom who envisioned a disaster of epic proportions.

Our hard work paid off. The job was a success! Our parent’s neighbors noticed our hard work and their beautifully painted home, and soon we were receiving calls from others to paint their homes. Our prices were fair, the quality of our work was excellent, and over time we developed a reputation for providing a superior paint job and long-lasting value.

As time progressed and our painting business grew, we needed to hire additional painters. We always hired the best persons possible and our choice of quality individuals was key to our growth and success. We trained our painters using best practices, taught everyone to pay attention to detail, and insisted that the job site always be kept neat. Our painters, some of whom have been with us for over 30 years, have been the key to our success. To a person, our painters are highly skilled, professional, honest, and very nice people.

Over the years we’ve had the good fortune of painting over 5000 houses in the West Hartford Connecticut and Farmington Valley towns. Once a project is slated for scheduling, a written Proposal is sent out. The Proposal describes in detail the scale, scope, and pricing of the work to be done. We always give a start and completion date so our customers can schedule accordingly. Our Proposal includes our Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor license number, our EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm registration number, and a Notice of Cancellation.

Approximately a week prior to starting work, our customers receive notification providing the date and time work will be starting. This notification helps our customers with their planning needs and provides an opportunity to answer any last minute questions. We make every attempt to work around our customer’s busy schedules, pet needs, and seasonal/situational issues; perhaps a birds nest under the deck with babies about to hatch or a graduation party ready to happen. Artillery Fungus Solutions from Kevin Palmer Painting

As a power washing and painting contractor, Kevin Palmer Painting is often called by homeowners and businesses to solve problems involving unsightly and irritating surface blemishes, stains, and discolorations. Commonly, our power washing technicians deal with mold, mildew, algae, heavy oxidation, and chalking. One of the more common problems we encounter is the presence of artillery fungus.

Artillery fungus, or as it is sometimes called, shotgun fungus, grows and thrives in wet, deteriorated mulch. The mulch can be fresh, recently installed, or years old. Mulch often contains artillery fungus which shoots spores that look like black pellets the size of the head of a pin onto a surface. The unfortunate victims of this attack can be almost anything: wood, aluminum, vinyl, glass. Exterior wood siding and trim that were freshly painted, vinyl siding and trim recently installed, even windows that were recently washed are all possible targets of artillery fungus.

Beware! Mulch is often the host of artillery fungus.

As a power washing and house painting professional, we routinely see problems involving artillery fungus. The first questions we are asked by our exterior painting and power washing customers whose homes and businesses are inflicted with artillery fungus is “what is this mess” followed “by how do I fix it?” The short answer is “artillery fungus” and “hire Kevin Palmer Painting.”

Once artillery fungus spores are on a surface they are very difficult if not impossible to remove. However, Kevin Palmer Painting has options available which will leave your home beautiful and in perfect condition once again.

When painting surfaces afflicted with artillery fungus that are scheduled to be painted, we mechanically remove artillery fungus by scraping and sanding. A skilled application of a fresh topcoat of premium quality acrylic stain or acrylic house paint applied by the professional painters of Kevin Palmer Painting make the surface look as good as new.

The problem arises when artillery fungus has attached itself to a prefinished item such as vinyl clad windows, prefinished trim, or factory finished siding. Although we commonly paint these items, it is discouraging for the customer to realize that a finish that was supposed to be “maintenance free” for 20 years will either remain unsightly or will need to be painted. Fortunately, we are also able to paint aluminum and vinyl siding, achieving excellent, long-lasting results.

Pachysandra and myrtle offer an attractive ground-cover alternative to mulch. Artillery fungus problems will disappear.

Kevin Palmer Painting recommends eliminating the source of artillery fungus. The first step to eliminating artillery fungus is to remove decomposed mulch from around the afflicted area. Replacement with groundcover such as pachysandra and myrtle is worthy of consideration. These plantings are an attractive alternative to mulch, and once established, require less maintenance than mulch. Some people replace mulch with decorative stones which is another alternative. Others use fungicides in an attempt to kill artillery fungus. Kevin Palmer Painting does not recommend the use of chemical alternatives to eliminate artillery fungus due to health, safety, and environmental concerns. Getting Ready for Exterior House Painting 2017

With spring around the corner, it’s time for Kevin Palmer Painting to transition from interior painting projects to power washing, roof cleaning, and exterior house painting.

 

All of our professional painters are anxious to once again be able to work outdoors. Sunshine and fresh air do wonders for the spirit. Before we can begin our exterior work, however, there is much to do to get ready.

 

One of the first orders of business is to make sure all of our equipment is ready to go.

 

We thoroughly check our trucks and vehicles for safety. We make sure that everything is mechanically sound, inspecting the tires, brakes, and all mechanical systems. We check the ladder racks to make sure everything will be secure. All doors must latch properly and the vans must be loaded with the necessary equipment, sundries, and supplies.

We check the drop cloths to ensure they are clean and will protect our customer’s property. Old drop clothes are discarded as necessary and replaced with new canvas drop cloths. Plastic, masking tape, roof brackets, specialized primers, and tools are all loaded aboard and ready to go.

Our roof cleaning equipment is likewise thoroughly inspected. Roof washing is tough on equipment so it is particularly important to thoroughly examine all pumps, hoses, and connections. Only after our thorough and exacting examination has been completed will equipment leave the shop. This attention to detail will pay off when our roof cleaning projects are undertaken. Ladders are carefully and thoroughly inspected. All ladders must be structurally sound and in perfect operating condition. Extension ladders are examined to ensure they are straight. Any ladder with a bow or structural imperfection is discarded. Stepladders are checked for stability including close inspection of the ladder rungs. Step letter trays must be secure and in good working condition.

 

Each of our painters will be issued a set of new brushes. Kevin Palmer Painting has always used only the finest brushes available. How to Choose An Exterior Paint Color

When painting a home, selecting a color for the exterior can be a daunting experience. The painting professionals at Kevin Palmer Painting have been helping customers choose the perfect color for their homes for decades.

The best approach to exterior painting color selection is to choose the siding color first. Do not concern yourself with the color of the shutters or the front door until after you have selected the main body color.

 

We recommend driving around your neighborhood and locally to find house colors that are appealing to you. Try to differentiate what it is about the house you like from the houses that you don’t like. Sometimes it’s the color, sometimes it’s the combination of colors, sometimes it’s the roof and how it blends with the siding color, sometimes it’s how the house is sited or its relationship with the landscaping.

 

Recognize that shingles, shakes, and clapboard siding will appear differently even when painted with the exact same color and sheen. Stucco and brick will also influence the way a color appears. Determine what you like about a color. Isolate the color from the structure. Try to look at houses with siding similar to your house.

Look at magazines. There are many pictures of houses which may have color combinations that might be what you are looking for. Apps are another excellent option to consider. Houzz and Pinterest have many examples of different houses and will offer ideas about color possibilities.

 

Paint manufacturers offer computer programs allowing you to take a picture of your house, upload the image, and paint your home in a virtual manner. This process will give you an idea of what your home will look like with varying colors and you can switch your options with a click of your mouse. A visit to your local paint store is helpful. There you will find color decks, larger color samples, and color collections. You will find groupings of historical colors, trending colors, contemporary colors, and everything in between.

Perception and reality are not always the same. If you don’t like the sample color on the house after a sample is made, no problem. We will not rush you on color selection and will make as many samples as you need to assure that you love your home’s new color.

When you finally determine the body color that you like the best, move on to the shutter and door colors. Often times it is very helpful to use color cards for this process. What we typically advise is to look at coordinated color cards that show compatible and complementary colors. Look for one of the colors in the group that is the same as or close to your siding color, and then look at other colors in that grouping to see professional decorator’s recommendations.
