Mistakes People Make When Getting a Painting Estimate

August 11th, 2025

1. Confusing a service with a commodity. Don’t we all wish we could make everything in life simple? Who’s the best doctor? What’s the best car? Where is the best place to get something to eat? If only life were so simple. Painting is a service. And as in life, there are good painters and bad painters, expensive paint jobs and cheap paint jobs, and “best experience ever” and “worst experience of my life.” At Kevin Palmer painting, we make things simple. Quality work, combined with dependable service, done by reliable, professional painters, completed in a timely manner, and for the price quoted.

2. I don’t have to be there for you to give me an estimate, do I? No, you don’t if you don’t care who is doing what working for what price. It’s amazing that some people will trust an unknown person they’ve never met to work on what is probably their most valuable financial asset. Meet with your potential painting contractor, ask questions pertaining to the work you would like to have quoted, and listen to the painters you are considering for your project. Are they knowledgeable, considerate about your property, and on time? Were they punctual for the estimate and prepared to answer your questions and address your concerns? These and a multitude of other issues can only be addressed by an in-person meeting.

3. Avoid the snake oil salesman who happens to be working in the neighborhood and can give you a good price if you will sign up on the spot for their services. Connecticut protected citizens with a 3-day Notice of Cancellation, but typically, reputable contractors will have a backlog of work and will schedule your work in a mutually convenient time and date. There is no need to rush to schedule your job under pressure from a contractor.

4. Does anybody know a contractor who will do the best work for the cheapest price immediately? Facebook users seem to think this mythical contractor exists as social media users are constantly asking for recommendations. Does anyone honestly believe that the best quality for the cheapest price is generally consistent and attainable? There is no question that people need to balance cost against quality, but experience teaches that you usually get what you pay for, and one size doesn’t fit all. The reliability, quality workmanship, and after service follow-up are what has enabled Kevin Palmer Painting to be in business for over 50 years.

5. Painting involves skilled work done by trained professional painters in a knowledgeable and responsive manner. It is not rocket science. Your painting contractor should be able to explain to you what products he will be using on your home and why, the importance of power washing and a properly prepared surface, different application techniques and which application method is most suitable for your project. A contractor’s responses to your questions and the suggestions and solutions to problems should go a long way towards helping you make an informed decision as to who is best suited to paint your home. Kevin Palmer Painting gives free estimates, provides a detailed and thorough explanation of all services offered, and fair pricing for all work under consideration. A detailed and plain language Proposal is then sent to those requesting scheduling. Questions are always welcomed and clarification if needed is always provided.

Every so often the professional painters of Kevin Palmer Painting have the opportunity to work at a job site so beautiful that it makes coming to work like going on vacation. Restoring the deck for an Avon, Connecticut couple was one of those opportunities.

The homeowners wanted to protect and preserve their deck overlooking the Farmington Valley. They chose Kevin Palmer Painting to undertake this project.

The initial evaluation of the deck showed that the deck had been well maintained over the years but needed to be sanded to remove coatings which had deteriorated over time.

The floor was professionally sanded leaving a surface ready for preparatory work to begin. The painting professionals of Kevin Palmer Painting thoroughly cleaned the deck as the 1st step in the coating process. Discolored areas as were treated to remove stains and discoloration where grills and furniture markings showed over time. What a Difference a Color Makes!

June 29th, 2020

Kevin Palmer Painting recently completed another exterior painting project in Simsbury Connecticut.

Our professional painters gave this vintage colonial an exterior update.

The owners wanted to refresh their home’s appearance and give it a timeless appeal. They certainly succeeded. The color looks beautiful and the finish blends perfectly with the surrounding landscaping and plantings.

This home has aluminum siding that was oxidized and needed cleaning. Power washing removed the chalking and surface contaminants. A biodegradable, environmentally friendly cleanser used to remove mold and mildew, and the house was ready for painting.

Our men prepared the house for painting. Attention was paid to details necessary to achieve a beautiful, durable, long-lasting paint finish. Holes were filled with epoxy patching compound, loose paint was removed and sanded, and stains were given a coat of shellac.

The painters then applied a beautiful finish to the home’s exterior. The work was done with state-of-the-art airless equipment enabling us to provide the ultimate finish. No brush marks, no lap marks, no dribbles or sags! The house looks brand-new and the new paint job will provide a maintenance free surface for years to come.

The owners have great taste and were a pleasure to work for. Their color selection was beautiful and the painting professionals at Kevin Palmer Painting were proud to have been selected to complete this exterior painting project.

The painting professionals at Kevin Palmer Painting were thrilled to paint the exterior of a modern Simsbury classic. Admired by many, this gorgeous house, designed and built by John Hartwell, is both beautiful and elegant. The painting project included restoring an historic carriage barn which is part of this magical property.

As the first part of the painting process, the house and barn were carefully and thoroughly power washed. Care was taken to protect the landscaping and beautiful flower beds surrounding the house and barn. Mold and mildew were removed, paving the way for the next stage of the exterior painting process, the preparatory work. Scraping and sanding off loose paint ensured a sound foundation for the new coatings. The window sash on the carriage barn were glazed and restored to their original grandeur. Caulking of the trim insured a watertight seal and shellac was applied to the knot holes to eliminate bleed through.

The painters then applied Sherwin-Williams Woodscape stain to the siding and Sherwin-Williams Duration paint to the trim.

The results speak for themselves.

Using only premium grade products will protect the house and barn well into the future. The house and carriage barn look beautiful!

Of particular satisfaction in painting this home was to be part of the history of this home. John Hartwell, the home’s builder, is a close friend. John Hartwell designed and built this home with a commitment to quality and craftsmanship rarely found these days. The home is sensitive to the magnificent landscape environment and blends with the beautiful meadows and rolling hills surrounding the home.

The color John originally selected for this home is the color most often requested by our customers, Hartwell Yellow. How nice to have a color name for a special person. It’s a beautiful color that enhances the property and at the same time blends with the surrounding grounds.
